Lisbon, Portugal Travel Guide
Trams, tiles and Tagus views
Why visit Lisbon
Yellow trams climb Alfama’s hills, miradouros frame the Tagus, and pastel de nata bakeries anchor every corner. Lisbon is Europe’s value capital — the food, wine and rooms cost a fraction of Paris or London, and the beaches of Cascais are 40 minutes away. The 28 tram is the classic ride; the LX Factory and Time Out Market are the modern draw.

Start with Lisbon's elegant downtown grid. From Praça do Comércio walk uphill through Rua Augusta to Praça do Rossio for morning coffee at Café Nicola. Then take the historic Tram 28 from Martim Moniz to Graça — go early (before 09:30) to actually get a seat. Lunch at the Time Out Market in Cais do Sodré, then stroll Chiado for the bookstores and the Ginjinha cherry liqueur shops. 👉 Book a centrally-located hotel in Baixa or Chiado from Trip.com — expect €90–€150/night in shoulder season. Backpackers should check Trip.com for dorms from €22, or compare bundled rates on Trip.com.
Day 2: Belém & the Tagus river
Take the train from Cais do Sodré west to Belém (15 min, €1.50). The morning is for the Jerónimos Monastery (UNESCO; arrive before 09:00 to skip the queue), the Belém Tower, and — non-negotiable — the original Pastéis de Belém custard tarts. Spend the afternoon at the MAAT contemporary museum on the riverfront. 👉 If you want a deeper dive, a guided Belém food & history tour from GetYourGuide runs €40–€60 and includes the queue-skip ticket for Jerónimos. Worth it if you have limited time.
Day 3: Alfama & sunset at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, Alfama, is a labyrinth of azulejo-tiled walls, fado bars and laundry-strung windows. Spend the morning getting deliberately lost. The São Jorge Castle (€15) sits above; the view from the ramparts is the iconic Lisbon-postcard shot. At sunset, climb to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — locals' favourite, far less crowded than Miradouro de Santa Luzia, with a panorama from the river to the bridge. For dinner, book a fado dinner-show in Alfama. The small-group Alfama walking + fado tours on GetYourGuide are reliable; €55–€75 including a three-course meal.
