Europe is packed with incredible cities that won't drain your bank account. While Paris and London grab the headlines, savvy travellers know that some of the continent's most rewarding destinations are also the most affordable. Here are 10 budget-friendly European cities where your money goes further in 2026.

1. Porto, Portugal

Porto offers stunning azulejo-tiled buildings, world-class port wine and riverside dining at a fraction of Lisbon's prices. A meal at a traditional tasca costs €8–12, and many of the city's best attractions — including wandering the Ribeira district — are free. Don't miss the Livraria Lello bookshop and a sunset from the Dom Luís I Bridge.

2. Kraków, Poland

Kraków's magnificent Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it remains one of Europe's best-value cities. Expect to pay €5–8 for a hearty Polish lunch, and just €1–2 for public transport. The Wawel Castle grounds, Kazimierz Jewish Quarter and Planty Park are all free to explore.

3. Budapest, Hungary

Straddling the Danube, Budapest offers thermal baths, ruin bars and Art Nouveau architecture at remarkably low prices. A day pass to the famous Széchenyi Baths costs around €20, and street food like lángos (fried dough) is just €3. The city's public transport system is excellent and affordable.

4. Athens, Greece

Beyond the Acropolis, Athens is a vibrant modern city with incredible food. Souvlaki wraps cost €2–3, and many archaeological sites offer free admission on specific days. The Plaka and Monastiraki neighbourhoods are perfect for budget-friendly wandering, and the street art scene in Exarchia is world-class.

5. Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is one of Europe's most underrated capitals and easily its most affordable. A full meal costs €4–6, hostels start at €8 per night and the free walking tour is one of the best on the continent. Visit the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, soak in the mineral baths and explore Vitosha Mountain on the city's doorstep.

6. Bucharest, Romania

Romania's capital is a city of contrasts — communist-era architecture sits alongside hipster cafés and Belle Époque mansions. Prices are remarkably low: expect €5–7 for a restaurant meal and €10–15 for a private room in a guesthouse. The Old Town nightlife rivals anything in Western Europe at half the cost.

7. Split, Croatia

While Dubrovnik prices have soared, Split remains excellent value. Diocletian's Palace is free to wander, beaches are public and local restaurants serve fresh seafood for €10–15. It's also the gateway to the islands of Hvar and Brač, reachable by affordable local ferries.

8. Tallinn, Estonia

Tallinn's fairy-tale Old Town looks like it should be expensive, but Estonia offers surprisingly good value. You can eat well for €8–12, and the city's medieval architecture, craft beer scene and digital nomad culture make it endlessly interesting. Visit in shoulder season (May or September) for the best weather and lowest prices.

9. Seville, Spain

Seville offers tapas culture, flamenco and stunning Moorish architecture without the premium price tag of Barcelona or Madrid. Many bars still serve free tapas with drinks, and the Alcázar and Cathedral are reasonably priced. The best time to visit is spring, when the orange trees are in bloom and temperatures are perfect.

10. Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo is one of Europe's hidden gems. The Baščaršija bazaar area feels like stepping into another world, ćevapi (grilled meat) costs under €3 and the city's complex history — from Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian architecture to war memorials — is deeply moving. Accommodation is incredibly affordable, with excellent guesthouses from €15 per night.
