Car rental tips for London
- Insurance: basic cover usually has an excess (what you pay if the car is damaged or stolen). Compare the excess, not just the headline rate.
- Deposit: expect a hold on a credit card, often tied to the excess. Many firms refuse debit cards or ask for extra cover.
- Fuel policy: choose full-to-full. Full-to-empty means paying for a tank at the firm's price with no refund for what is left.
- Cancellation: check the free-cancellation cut-off and whether you pay now or at the desk. Prepaid rates are cheaper but harder to change.
- Driver rules: under-25s usually pay a young-driver fee, and non-EU licences may need an International Driving Permit.
- At pick-up: photograph the car all round and keep the check-in sheet. City branches are often cheaper than the airport desk.
Before you book
Are there prices on this page?
Only an estimate. We cannot read live availability, so the range shown is a typical price for the place, month and car class, not a quote. Each button opens the partner site for your pick-up place and dates (where the site supports it) and that site shows current prices.
What does the insurance excess mean?
Basic cover (collision damage waiver and theft protection) usually carries an excess: the amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen, often several hundred to a couple of thousand euros. Check it in each quote. Separate excess insurance or a credit-card policy can cover it, but you normally pay the rental firm first and claim back.
Why is a deposit held on my card?
The rental firm blocks a deposit, usually linked to the excess and fuel, on a credit card. It is a hold, not a charge, and is released after you return the car. Many firms do not accept debit cards or ask for extra cover if you use one.
Which fuel policy is best?
Full-to-full: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. With full-to-empty you prepay a tank at the firm's price and get no refund for fuel left over.
Can I return the car somewhere else?
Often yes, usually for a one-way fee. Our links assume the same pick-up and drop-off place, so set a different drop-off on the partner site and check the fee in the quote.
