Frequently asked questions

How do I convert L/100km to mpg?
Divide 235.215 by the L/100km figure to get US mpg, or divide 282.481 by it to get UK (imperial) mpg. For example 8 L/100km is about 29.4 US mpg or 35.3 UK mpg. Lower L/100km means a thirstier car is using less fuel, while a higher mpg number means the same thing, so the two scales run in opposite directions.
Why are US and UK gallons different?
A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20 percent bigger. That is why the same car reports a higher mpg figure in the UK than in the US. Check which gallon a rental car or fuel price is quoted in before comparing.
What is a quick way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in my head?
Double the Celsius number and add 30 for a rough answer, so 20 C is about 70 F. The exact formula is multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32, which gives 68 F for 20 C. Body temperature of 37 C is 98.6 F.
How do I turn kilometres into miles quickly?
Multiply kilometres by 0.6 for a close estimate: 100 km is about 60 miles (exactly 62.1). Going the other way, miles times 1.6 gives kilometres, so a 60 mph road is about 97 km/h.
