Useful before you go

Train vs bus vs flight - the short version

Is the train or the bus cheaper?

On almost every European route the coach is cheaper - roughly €0.05–0.09 per kilometre against €0.10–0.18 for rail - but it takes about 1.7× as long. Under ~300 km the money gap is small and the time gap is large, so the train usually wins.

When does flying actually beat the train?

Add ~2 hours of airport time to every flight and rail is usually faster door to door up to about 700 km. Beyond that the plane pulls ahead quickly; beyond 1,500 km it is normally the only sensible option.

Are the prices on this page live?

No. Times and prices here are estimates calculated from the distance between the two cities, so you can compare the shape of each option at a glance. Final availability and prices are on the partner site.

Why do some routes show no train or bus?

We hide surface options beyond ~1,500 km, where the journey is either impossible without a ferry or so long that suggesting it would mislead. Flights are hidden under 150 km, where scheduled services essentially do not exist.

Do I book on WhatWhereVacay?

Never. Every "Select" button hands you to the operator or comparison site that actually sells the ticket. We may earn a commission on a booking, at no extra cost to you.
