Plug types and voltage by country

Pick where you live and where you are going. We will tell you if your plugs fit, if the voltage differs, and what to pack. Plug types, voltage and frequency for 140 popular destinations.

Check your trip

Choose your home country and a destination to see what you need.

Always check the label on your own device and the socket where you are staying. This guide lists the common nominal standard for each country (last reviewed October 2026), but older buildings, hotels and rural areas can differ. Confirm locally for anything expensive or heat-producing.

Will my device work abroad?

1

Read the charger label

Find the tiny print on the charger or the back of the device.

INPUT: 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz
2

Range 100-240V? Just an adapter

The device handles any voltage in the world. You only need a plug adapter so the pins fit. This covers most phone, laptop and camera chargers.

3

One voltage printed? Be careful

A label like 120V means the device is only for that voltage. In a 220-240V country it needs a voltage converter, or leave it at home. Hair dryers and kettles are the usual casualties.

Adapter and voltage questions

Do I need a voltage converter or just a plug adapter?

Look at the small print on your charger or device. If it says INPUT 100-240V, it is built for the whole world and you only need a plug adapter. If it shows a single voltage such as 120V, it needs a voltage converter in a 220-240V country, or you should use a locally bought replacement. Phones, laptops, tablets and camera chargers are almost always 100-240V. Hair dryers, straighteners, kettles and shavers often are not.

Is a plug adapter the same as a voltage converter?

No. A plug adapter only changes the shape of the pins so your plug fits the socket. It does nothing to the voltage. A converter or transformer changes the voltage, is heavier and is only needed for devices that are not dual-voltage.

Does 50 Hz versus 60 Hz matter for my devices?

For electronics with a switching power supply, such as phone and laptop chargers, it does not. It can matter for some older clocks, turntables and motor-driven appliances. The device label usually lists 50/60Hz if it handles both.

Which plug types should I pack for a trip to several countries?

A single universal travel adapter that covers types A, C, G and I handles most of the world. Check the table below for every country on your route, and look for sockets that match the plugs on your own devices.
