Road trip cost calculator

Work out what a drive will cost in fuel, tolls and parking, then split it fairly between everyone in the car. Kilometres or miles, any fuel economy unit, any currency.

Unit system

Switches all three units at once and converts your numbers. Metric: km, L/100 km, price per litre. US: miles, mpg (US), price per US gallon. UK: miles, mpg (UK), price per litre.

One way, as shown on your map app.

Journey

Doubles the distance. Tolls and parking below are for the whole trip.

Check the trip computer or your car's handbook.

Example value shown - replace it with your local pump price.

Vehicle type (optional - fills in a typical fuel economy)

Typical values for a petrol or diesel vehicle of that kind, not measurements. Real fuel use varies with engine, speed and load, so use your own figure if you know it. Pump prices differ by country and week, so enter your local price above.

    Road trip cost questions

How do I convert mpg to L/100 km?

Divide 235.2 by your US mpg, or 282.5 by your UK mpg, to get litres per 100 km. For example 30 US mpg is about 7.8 L/100 km. Pick your unit in the calculator and it converts for you.

Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?

No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, roughly 20 percent bigger. That is why the same car shows a higher mpg figure in UK units than in US units. Choose the right gallon for both your fuel economy and your fuel price.

    How accurate is the estimate?

It multiplies the distance by your car's consumption and the pump price, so it is only as good as those inputs. Real consumption rises with motorway speed, heavy luggage, roof boxes, air conditioning, hills and cold weather, and brochure figures are often optimistic. If your number comes from a spec sheet, leave yourself a margin.

Should I include tolls and parking?

Yes, if you know them. Enter the total for the whole trip, including both directions when round trip is switched on. Check the official toll operator for exact prices, as they change and vary by vehicle type.
