Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?
It depends on the country. In the United States and Canada 15 to 20 percent is normal in restaurants, while in much of Europe a few percent or rounding up is plenty, and in Japan or South Korea tipping is not customary at all. Pick a country in the calculator to see a typical figure, and treat it as a starting point, not a rule.
Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?
Practice varies. Many people in the US tip on the pre-tax subtotal, others tip on the full total. This calculator tips on whatever amount you type in, so enter the subtotal if you want a pre-tax tip, or the full bill if you do not.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. A service charge printed on the bill (common in the UK, parts of Asia and tourist areas) often pays for service already, so an extra tip is optional. Check the bill first, and if a charge is included, set the tip to 0 or just round up.
What does the round-up option do?
It rounds what each person pays up to the next whole currency unit, for example from 31.40 to 32.00. The extra goes to the tip, so the tip percentage you actually leave is slightly higher than the one you picked. It makes paying in cash easier.
Why do the shares differ by a cent sometimes?
The calculator works in whole cents, so it never drifts. When the total cannot be divided evenly between everyone, a few people pay one cent more than the rest and the note under the result tells you how many.
