Frequently asked questions
How does the capital cities quiz work?
Each game has 10 rounds. You see a country with its flag and pick its capital from four choices. The wrong answers are capitals from the same part of the world, so you cannot simply rule them out by region. At the end you get a score, a rank title and a list of the capitals you missed.
Which countries are in the quiz?
Over 100 sovereign states across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas and Oceania. Countries with several capitals or a disputed capital, such as South Africa, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Ivory Coast or Israel, are left out so that every question has one clear answer.
Which capitals do people get wrong most often?
The big, famous city is often not the capital. Canberra, not Sydney, for Australia. Ankara, not Istanbul, for Turkey. Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, for Brazil. Wellington, not Auckland, for New Zealand. Ottawa, not Toronto, for Canada.
Why are Amsterdam and Bern the answers?
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands in the constitution, even though the government sits in The Hague. Bern is the seat of the Swiss government and parliament and is called the federal city. Those are the answers the quiz expects.
Does the quiz save my score?
Your best score is stored only in your own browser, so it stays private and resets if you clear site data. There is no sign-up. The flag pictures are loaded from the free flagcdn.com image service, and the quiz still works if a picture does not load.
How do I challenge a friend?
Finish a game and use the share buttons. The link carries your score, and your friend sees a banner saying what they need to beat when they open it.
