Frequently asked questions

How many countries are there in the world?
This checklist uses 195: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus the two observer states, Vatican City and Palestine. Other counts exist (Taiwan, Kosovo and dependent territories are handled differently by different lists), so treat 195 as a practical yardstick, not a political statement.
What counts as having visited a country?
That is your call. A common rule among travellers is that you left the airport and did something there, such as a meal or a night. Changing planes in transit usually does not count, and many people also count land borders they crossed on foot. Tick whatever rule you are happy to defend.
Is my list saved, and who can see it?
Your list is saved only in your own browser (local storage), so it stays private and disappears if you clear site data. There is no account and nothing is stored on our servers. The share link carries a short code of your ticks so a friend can see the same map, but only if you send it to them.
How do I compare my list with a friend?
Use the share buttons below the counter. The link opens your map for the person who gets it, with a banner saying how many countries you have visited. They press "Start my own" and fill in theirs, then can send theirs back.
Why are Hong Kong, Greenland, Puerto Rico or Taiwan not listed?
The list is limited to sovereign states plus the two UN observers, which keeps the denominator simple and the same for everyone. If you count territories, just keep a note of them separately.
How are the continents decided?
Roughly by the UN geoscheme with travel-friendly choices: Russia, Cyprus and Turkey follow the usual European and Asian conventions used by airlines, the Caucasus countries and Kazakhstan are in Asia, and Central America and the Caribbean sit under North America.
