Its most famous cultural role is at Halloween (Samhain), where the loaf is baked with symbolic charms—a ring for marriage, a coin for wealth, a stick for an unlucky year—and sliced or distributed to determine each person’s fortune. This custom, once tied to divination rituals, remains popular across Ireland and among the diaspora, though the specific charms vary by household.
