Tongba

Tongba is a traditional fermented millet beverage originating in the eastern Himalayan regions of Nepal, particularly associated with the Limbu and Rai ethnic communities. Its exact origins are debated, as the practice of fermenting millet into a mild alcoholic drink likely predates written records, but it has been enjoyed for centuries as a staple of communal and ceremonial life.

Traditionally served warm in a wooden or bamboo vessel called a tongba, the fermented millet is infused with hot water and sipped through a narrow bamboo straw, with more water added as the drink is consumed. Regional variations exist across the hills of Nepal, Sikkim, and Darjeeling, where different ethnic groups may adjust fermentation times or add local herbs, but the cultural role remains consistent: tongba is shared during festivals, weddings, and gatherings, symbolizing hospitality and social bonding.
