Sarajevski Ćevapi

Sarajevski Ćevapi, small grilled minced-meat sausages, are a cornerstone of Bosnian cuisine. Though similar dishes exist across the Balkans, the specific style from Sarajevo—typically made with a combination of beef and lamb or just beef, seasoned with garlic and black pepper—has become iconic. The dish’s exact origins are debated, but it likely evolved from Ottoman-era köfte traditions and gained prominence in Sarajevo during the Austro-Hungarian period, solidifying its place as a national comfort food.

Regional variations are subtle but defining: Sarajevski Ćevapi are distinctly longer and thinner than cevapi found in Banja Luka or Belgrade. They are customarily served on a flatbread called somun with chopped raw onions, and optionally with sour cream (kajmak) or red pepper relish (ajvar).
