Why visit Kyoto

Kyoto served as Japan's imperial capital for over a thousand years, and around 1,600 temples and shrines survive inside the city limits. Kinkaku-ji's gold-leaf pavilion and the vermilion gates of Fushimi Inari sit on opposite sides of town, while the bamboo groves of Arashiyama are a 20-minute train ride west. Central Kyoto is walkable and flat, so most sights come without climbing. Tokyo is about 2 hours 15 minutes away on the Tokaido Shinkansen.
