Why visit Venice

There are no cars in Venice: vaporetto line 1 takes 45 minutes from Santa Lucia station to Piazza San Marco, and a €1.30 espresso at a Cannaregio bar is the cheapest breakfast in town. Between the Rialto fish market and the Accademia bridge, calli dead-end into canals and every wrong turn costs a bridge crossing. Go early, when Dorsoduro’s fondamenta is empty, and check the acqua alta tide tables for an October-to-March visit.
