Diocletian built his retirement palace here in AD 305, and around 3,000 people still live within its walls — the Peristyle, the cellars and the cathedral share one courtyard. Ferries to Hvar, Brač and Šolta leave from the harbour behind the Riva, and Marjan hill’s 178-metre viewpoint is a 20-minute walk from Marmontova. Evenings end at Bačvice, where locals play picigin in the shallows.
