Takoyaki
Molten battered balls filled with octopus, off a special griddle.
About Takoyaki
A savoury batter is poured into a dimpled iron pan with a piece of octopus in each well, turned with picks into round balls, then topped with sauce, mayo, seaweed and dancing bonito flakes. They are Osaka beloved street snack, eaten hot enough to burn.
🏛️ History & Culture
Takoyaki originated in Osaka, Japan, in the 1930s, evolving from earlier savory dumpling-style street foods. Its creation is widely credited to a street vendor who adapted a recipe for a batter ball filled with octopus, using a specially designed dimpled iron pan to shape the now-iconic round balls.
While Osaka remains the undisputed home of takoyaki, regional variations exist—such as the egg-rich akashiyaki from nearby Hyogo Prefecture, which is served in a light broth rather than with sauce. Culturally, takoyaki is a symbol of Osaka's vibrant street-food identity, enjoyed at festivals, as a casual snack, and often prepared at home with dedicated family-size pans.
